"Noticing" Improv Workshop

How to make the most of what’s right in front of you
An Improv Workshop with Tracy Burns

As improvisers, we talk a lot about “being in the moment,” but most of the time we’re so busy looking for "offers" (if we’re not thinking of ideas) that we don’t notice what’s happening right in front of us.

In this 2-hour workshop, Tracy will give you tools and techniques for focusing your attention that will not only keep you in the moment but will help you play with wild abandon and connect to what truly inspires you most. Your scenes will become effortless, playful and more often than not, hilariously surprising. This workshop is great for experienced improvisers who are looking for a new take on scene work, as well as those who are just starting out.

Keith Johnstone’s Impro System in Theory & Practice
Limited Capacity seats available

“We have to know why the games exist, or they’ll be misused” ~ Keith Johnstone.  In other words, know your improvisational theory!  This workshop will focus on key foundational theories of the Impro System as participants learn and engage in several of Johnstone’s most popular games and techniques.

“Just as every scientific theory implies a range of experiments, so each improvisation theory implies a set of games.  We have to know why the games exist, or they’ll be misused”  ~ Keith Johnstone

Keith Johnstone’s celebrated work as an innovator of impro began over 50 years ago at London’s Royal Court Theatre.  Today, classrooms everywhere—within and beyond the traditional theatre—apply the Impro System into their curriculum. Theresa R. Dudeck, Ph.D., argues in her book Keith Johnstone: A Critical Biography (London: Bloomsbury, 2013) that the Impro System is a “system” because it cannot be reduced down to its parts without decreasing its efficacy.  But because Johnstone’s work has also had extensive commercial success, the fundamentals (i.e., the underpinning theories) of the system often get compromised and impro gets branded as competitive or in ways that do not express its infinite possibilities.  Like Johnstone, Dudeck understands the importance of incorporating the theories into the range of applied impro courses she teaches at Chapman University; because once students grasp the theories, it becomes possible for them to identify how an exercise, game, or technique can be applied to solve problems in diverse situations.

This workshop will focus on the key theories underpinning Johnstone’s unique system of improvisational training as participants engage in several of Johnstone’s most popular games, exercises, and techniques.  Dudeck hopes this workshop will inspire participants to re-evaluate their understanding of the Impro System and promote further dialogue on how the system can be applied to actor training, business, personal growth, and beyond.

Limited Capacity seats available

Led by Andrew Wollman and Chris McGowan of Doctor Who Live!

In this 2-hour workshop for ADVANCED improv students, we will discuss how to turn your favorite show/book/comic into a working improv show format. We start by breaking down how we took Doctor Who's tropes and married them to a modified Harold structure to create our form. Then we'll pick a property as a group to brainstorm a format for, then spend the rest of the time playing with that new form.  This workshop is ideal for those already comfortable with the basics of improv.

Chekhov UnScripted! Performance
Limited Capacity seats available

A prolific writer of short stories and other forms, Anton Chekhov wrote only a handful of full-length plays, but they revolutionized theatre. With his meticulous observation of character, his anti-melodramatic action, and his wistful evocation of isolated characters trapped in their provincial self-delusion, he left a legacy of funny, haunting and unique creations that still delight audiences today. Impro Theatre creates a new Chekhovian world populated by people who dream of a different life, all the while dealing with the everyday unpredictability of feeling love, disillusionment and the certain catastrophe that is the next moment.

Critical praise for "Chekhov UnScripted":

L.A. WEEKLY – PICK OF THE WEEK!  “You don’t have to be a Chekhov aficionado to appreciate this entertaining and clever mock-up of his art. The evening’s humor derives from a savvy and seasoned ensemble who specialize in fashioning a unique, full-length play for each performance. The laughs are plentiful and hearty.”  - L.A. Weekly

“The most authentic and thoughtful staging of Anton Chekhov I’ve experienced in America.  Nimbly directed, sublimely performed, and – I want to emphasize – written all in real time, in front of a live audience. This company simultaneously invents, analyzes, praises, and riffs.  The company owes its reserved, almost stately approach to an ethos more interested in creating literature than in telling jokes.  Not that it’s not funny.  [There are] a lot of laughs, but they’re in service of story and character. A great show for anyone who thinks he hates Chekhov, or that he’s boring or “serious.”  Like any piece of art, it’s probably an even better show for someone who’s studied the source.” - Stage and Cinema
